Why is sugar harmful but sugar cane juice is not?

Sugar in its refined form is considered harmful primarily due to its high calorie content and lack of nutrients. When sugar is processed from its original source, like sugar cane, it loses virtually all fiber, vitamins, and minerals. Consuming too much refined sugar has been linked to various health issues including obesity, type 2 diabetes, and heart disease because it can lead to an increase in overall calorie intake and spikes in blood glucose levels.

Sugar cane juice, on the other hand, is the liquid extracted from pressing sugar cane stalks and contains not just sugar, but also some nutrients such as vitamins and minerals, and a small amount of fiber. These additional components can help mitigate the rapid spikes in blood glucose that pure sugar can cause. Sugar cane juice also contains antioxidants and other beneficial compounds that refined sugar lacks.

However, it’s important to note that sugar cane juice is still relatively high in sugar. Consuming it in moderation is key, especially for individuals who are watching their sugar intake due to diabetes or other health concerns. Sugar cane juice is generally healthier than refined sugar due to its additional nutrients, but it isn’t without its own sugar-related risks if consumed in large quantities.
